A Covid19-járvány reflektorfénybe állította a biotechnológia jelentőségét: erős versenyfutás zajlik világszerte a koronavírus elleni gyógyszer és vakcina kifejlesztéséért. Jogos a kérdésfeltevés: hogy áll Magyarország a biotechnológiai kutatás-fejlesztés globális versenyében, mi jellemzi ezt a tevékenységi kört? A tanulmány röviden összefoglalja a biotechnológiai K+F tevékenységi területeit, majd amerikai és európai összehasonlítással bemutatja az alszektor gazdasági súlyát, fejlődési tendenciáit. Bár az USA biotechnológiai szektora továbbra is erősebb, az európai biotechnológiai iparág felszálló, erősödő tendenciát mutat. Míg az USA-ban továbbra is jellemző a kockázati tőke és a tőzsdei bevezetés, Európában egyelőre a közfinanszírozás és a kkv-méretű cégek dominálnak, kiegészítő kutatási tevékenységre specializálódva. Ezután részletesen elemezzük a hazánkban bejegyzett, biotechnológiai vonatkozású K+F-tevékenységet végző cégeket. Az alszektor még mindig elaprózódott: mindössze pár száz főt foglalkoztat a 355 tágan értelmezett biotechnológiai K+F-cég. Az adatok egyértelműen jelzik, hogy a biotechnológiai K+F-tevékenység Magyarországon továbbra is a mikro- és kisvállalkozások világa. Az érintett gazdasági társaságok mérsékelt árbevételt generálnak, alapvetően kiegészítő tevékenységekre jöttek létre. Közel negyedük induló és csak 13%-uk mondható tapasztalt, érett vállalkozásnak. Vizsgálatunkba a hazai biotech cégek innovációs outputját, azaz magukat az innovációkat is bevontuk. Ezen cégek iparjogvédelmi aktivitása sem vált intenzívebbé az elmúlt tíz esztendőben, bár a biotechnológiai kutatás-fejlesztés kétségkívül iparjogvédelem-intenzív szakágazatnak számít. Van néhány olyan cég, amely innovatív kutatási eredményeit sikeresen le tudta védetni, így a tevékenység innovatív outputját tekintve ezek a cégek mindenféleképpen eredményesnek tekinthetők. Előfordulásuk főleg a piros biotechnológiai ágazatban figyelhető meg. Sajnálatos tény, hogy arányuk a hazai biotechnológiai K+F-alszektorban a 6%-ot sem éri el. --- The COVID-19 pandemic has put the spotlight on the significance of biotechnology: there is a fierce global race to develop medication and vaccine for the coronavirus. It is reasonable to ask where Hungary is in the global race of biotechnology research and development and what characterises these activities. The study starts with a brief summary of the areas of biotechnology R&D, which is followed by a comparison of the US and Europe, describing the economic significance and development trends of this subsector. Even though the biotechnology sector is still stronger in the US, this industry is on the rise in Europe as well. While in the US companies use venture capital and are typically listed, in Europe public funding and SMEs are dominant so far, and the focus is on basic research. The study then analyses Hungarian companies with R&D activities in biotechnology in detail. The subsector is still fragmented; the 355 companies with activities that suit a wider definition of biotechnology R&D only employ a few hundred people. The data clearly show that still predominantly micro and small enterprises are engaged in R&D activities in biotechnology. These companies have a moderate turnover and were typically established to perform research as an ancillary activity. Roughly 25% of enterprises in the subsector are start-ups and only 13% are mature companies. The study also covers the innovation output of Hungarian biotech companies, i.e. the innovations themselves. Over the past 10 years, Hungarian biotech companies have not become more active in obtaining industrial property right protection. However, the biotech R&D sector is definitely IP active as compared to other industries in Hungary. Some companies obtained protection for their innovative research results, so these are successful in terms of the innovative output of their activities. These companies work mostly in red biotechnology. Unfortunately, their share in the Hungarian biotechnology R&D subsector is less than 6%.
