Can Human Capital Enhancement Narrow the Gender Gap?
This article examines the impact of a policy-driven exogenous change in higher education resources on the gender wage gap. We focus on the implementation of China’s higher education expansion policy, which has contributed to the enhancement of human capital. Our findings indicate that the higher education expansion leads to an 8.4% reduction in the gender wage gap. This decline can be attributed to the role of higher education expansion in narrowing the gender gap in years of education. Concurrently, due to the higher rate of return on education for females compared to males, this ultimately results in a reduction of the gender wage gap. The gender gap effect of education expansion is more pronounced in the service sector, low-income groups, low-education cohorts, and the eastern region
