Globally, sustainability challenges are becoming even more material, reaching thresholds of importance to companies' long-term strategies, to their customers, and external stakeholders. From increasing demand for natural resources to economic disparity to climate change, companies are facing a more complex array of tradeoffs and risks across their value chains. Population growth, a rising middle class, rapid urbanization, and economic growth are all fueling an increasing demand for food, water, energy, land, and other resources. In the last decade, emerging markets saw an 80 percent increase in per capita income, which in turn is resulting in an increase in consumption. By 2030, another three billion middle class consumers are expected to drive up demand even further. Early projections show an 80 percent increase in energy use and 60 percent increase in water use. Health services around the world need to constantly deliver high quality care at lower cost and against rising expectations and demand. To achieve this we need to frequently improve our existing health systems and processes. Any change requires a significant investment of time, financial resource and leadership effort. There is evidence that up to 70% of all organizational change fails to survive and that is just not acceptable when undertaking health care improvement. Pharma MNCs as well as large Indian companies are taking an interest in sustainability by implementing initiatives and reporting on their success in the areas of energy and water consumption, emissions and waste treatment and handling, access to medicine by using differential pricing and voluntary licensing. The pharmaceutical industry in India is poised for a period of robust growth driven by alliances and partnerships. Success in the market will be dependent not only on pharma companies but also on other stakeholders like healthcare providers, health insurance companies, medical technology companies, government, patient groups as well as society at large acting in concert. How well they do will determine the future of the Indian pharma industry
