Chapter 4 Intrahousehold distribution and the family
This chapter focuses on intrahousehold allocations and explains the roles in such allocations of endowments, preferences, human resource investment prices, household resource levels, labor market opportunities, and marriage markets. Intrahousehold allocations appear to be important in the determination of time use, human resource investments, and intra- and inter-generational transfers. The nature of such allocations have significant implications for efficiency, equity, and the efficacy of micro- and macro-economic policies, as well as, for the analysis of the impact of human resources on economic outcomes. In contrast to many areas of economics, many of the interesting studies in the economic analysis of intrahousehold allocations have been for developing countries because of the recent expanded availability of interesting micro household data sets for such countries. The nonconsensus models of household behavior emphasize that different household members, usually husband and wife, may have different preferences and different command over resources. On the basis of casual observations, this seems an important feature of households in many societies.
