Clamor at the gates : the new American immigration

This book analyzes US immigration policies. The US was open to immigrants from all over the world without restriction for the first 100 years of its national existence; first in 1924, and then again in 1965, immigration policies restricted the number of immigrants allowed to enter. The first group of articles deals directly with making and enforcing immigration policy; the next group of articles discusses the economic impact of immigration on other Americans. While immigration is generally discussed from the impact on labor markets, many immigrants become independent small businessmen or professionals. Another section of the book deals with topics related to the social and political adaptation of immigrants: 1) the role of education, 2) political influences, and 3) other social conditions. Finally, 2 articles deal with the significance of borders, national sovereignty, and citizenship; mass expulsion, illegal aliens, and the boundaries of the US political community are discussed. The questions "whom shall we welcome?" and "why those and not others?" are pending for US immigration policies.
