Cogeneration-heat-pump system optimization through simulation analysis
We use computer simulation to analyse a residential building of 36 dwellings with central heating consisting of an air-water heat pump and a FIAT total energy module (TOTEM), the latter producing the necessary electricity for the heat pump and supplying hot water through a heat exchanger. The simulation tested the effectiveness of different heat exchangers (radiators, fan coils, radiant floor panels) when used with the existing TOTEM heat-pump system. Several seasonal parameters (efficiency, COP, number of on and off settings, etc.) have been calculated and evaluated by integrating instantaneous values. Without computer simulation, it would not have been possible to obtain adequate quantitative information when dealing with such complex and/or innovative systems. In the building simulations, we used the z-transfer approach for heat-load predictions on an hourly basis, while plant simulations were performed using the TRNSYS code (with our own subroutines) on a 3-min basis.
