Comparison of Two Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Control Programs in an Oil Company
Background: Chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) caused 74% of global deaths in 2019 and, for decades, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been ranked first as an isolated cause of death, thus requiring the implementation of prevention and control measures. Occupational health services monitor a significant percentage of the population subject to illness from these pathologies and can develop measures to reduce cardiovascular risk (CVR).Methods: This study used secondary data to retrospectively assess a restricted and fixed cohort of 670 workers, to compare two CVD prevention and control programs in an oil company, between 01.01.2016 and 12.31.2018. Workers were divided into Groups A and B, according to the model of program to which they were linked.Findings: Group A improved the level of physical activity, consumption of fruits, vegetables (FLV) and controlled the alcohol, but the initially “high” CVR (0·4%) rose to 1·4%. In Group B, sugary drink consumption increased, the “intermediate” CVR went from 14·1% to 16·7%, with 0·6% of individuals maintaining “high” CVR.Interpretation: These results showed the programs produced no improvement in CVR, therefore, the Company strategies need reviewing to achieve the proposed objectives.Funding Information: This study did not have external funding or sponsorship.Declaration of Interests: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest. Ethics Approval Statement: Study approved by the ethics committee of the Bahia School of Medicine and Public Health under CAAE 14107619.3.0000.5544, in compliance with Resolution 466/2012 of the Ministry of Health. Employees who were in the company signed the Free and Informed Consent Term (TCLE). Secondary data were used, disregarding name and registration, to preserve the subject's identity
