Contextualizing Disruption in Hospitality & Tourism; A Review of Key Areas, Themes and Issues

Disruption is a frequent term in extensive academic domains concerning the market space. The binary approaches adopted to refer to this term include the radical innovations to reinvent or revolutionize the established business structures and positive effects thereof as well as the undesired interruptions posing challenges and menace to the survival of the business ecosystem. The tourism and hospitality sector witnessed notable fluctuations and adjustments due to recurrent disruptions in the world over the past few years. In this context, it is pertinent to analyse the implications of the notion of disruption in the tourism sector and identify the primary sources of disruptions in this global trade.The present review examines the recent researches listed in Web of Science Core Collections. Articles discuss disruption through the lens of emerging dynamics with an intention to identify the critical themes and issues in the tourism and hospitality sector has been used for the present research. The study employed a systematic review method to access and examine the relevant literature shortlisted through a strict inclusion criteria. The study's outcome yields a comprehensive and useful insight into the contemporary shifts in consumption and supply patterns of tourism and hospitality services. Three significant themes have been identified by the research; Covid-19 Pandemic, Peer-to-Peer accommodation, and Technology linked disruptions in the tourism field in recent years. It also highlights the need for innovation enabled adaptive strategies by management to minimize the risk caused by the frequent phenomenon of disruption
