Corona-Infektionen und die Dunkelziffer : vergleichen wir Äpfel mit Birnen?

Im Herbst 2020 nehmen die Zahlen an erfassten Neuinfektionen mit dem Coronavirus europaweit zu. Während viele Politiker vor wachsenden Gefahren warnen, werfen Kritiker ihnen Panikmache vor und behaupten, die steigenden Infektionszahlen seien nur die Folge vermehrten Testens, nicht einer verstärkten Ausbreitung des Virus. Unsere Analyse zeigt, dass es in der Tat irreführend ist, die Zahlen zu in Deutschland erfassten Neuinfektionen aus dem Frühjahr direkt mit den aktuellen Neuinfektionszahlen zu vergleichen. Daraus folgt jedoch nicht, dass die steigenden Zahlen allein durch mehr Tests verursacht sind. Wir verwenden eine einfache Simulationsrechnung, um zu zeigen, dass die aktuellen Zahlen tatsächlich für ein verstärktes Infektionsgeschehen sprechen. Gleichzeitig ist es überzogen, die Lage Anfang Oktober in Deutschland mit der Situation der ersten Aprilhälfte gleichzusetzen. Bei gleicher Anzahl an Testungen im Frühjahr wären eher Anfang Mai 2020 ähnliche Zahlen an Neuinfektionen gemessen worden. Eine ausgewogene und realistische Interpretation der Infektionslage ist wichtig, um angemessene Reaktionen sowohl der politischen Entscheidungsträger als auch der Akteure des Wirtschaftslebens zu ermöglichen.
