Corrosion Resistance of Aln Monolayer and Al/Aln Multilayer Deposited by Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc
The AlN monolayer and (Al/AlN)5 multilayer coatings were deposited on the AZ31 magnesium alloys by filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) technology. The structure, corrosion resistance, and mechanisms of the monolayer and multilayer were studied. The AlN monolayer consisted of some holes and the (Al/AlN)5 multilayer showed a compact layered structure as some holes in the AlN sublayer interrupted by the Al sublayer. Two coatings improved corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloys and declined the corrosion current density of the magnesium alloy from 4.74×10 -4 A/cm 2 to 1.91×10 -6 and 1.11×10 -6 A/cm 2 , respectively. The (Al/AlN)5 multilayer showed better corrosion resistance than the AlN monolayer, which is attributed to the aluminum sublayers blocked continuity of the holes in AlN sublayers, and better adhesion strength and better crack propagation resistance of the multilayer, and deformation coordination between the coating and the substrate during corrosion
