COVID-19, Globalisation, and the State

The article examines the viability of globalisation and sovereignty of the state at the instance of COVID-19. Drawing on content analysis of interviews of purposively selected respondents as well as from data sourced through secondary outlets, the study reveals that the coronavirus pandemic seemingly strained the relations of some states’ evidenced in the varying levels of restriction placed by states during and after the discovery of a vaccine to the novel virus. This challenged the dynamics of globalisation at the instance of states’ quest to protect their sovereignty and by extension, their national interest. The study concludes that the trend of globalisation cannot be impeded by events and/or actions and inactions of the state in the international system, however, extreme they may seem. This is due to interconnectedness of the world economy and politics which is gradually witling down states’ sovereignty
