Croissance et inégalités au recensement de Damas
Shorter Frederic ?. ? Social Inequality and Population Growth as shown in the Census of Damascus. A sample survey of one-sixth of the population was used to study social inequalities in Damascus in 1976. The social class of a household was defined in terms of the average level of education attained by individual members. This simple method shows up a number of inequalities : the average duration of work during a lifetime, gainful employment of women, expectation of life, child mortality and female fertility. At present, fertility is still increasing, because birth intervals among the poorer sections are shortening, whereas fertility in the middle and upper social groups is beginning to diminish.
