Culture and regional economic development: Evidence from China
type="main" xml:lang="es"> <title type="main">Resumen</title> <p>La investigación empírica sobre los determinantes del desarrollo económico regional normalmente prescinde de la influencia de la cultura. Este estudio viene a llenar ese vacío, tratando de establecer un vínculo causal entre la cultura y el desarrollo económico en el contexto chino. Nuestros análisis empíricos se basan en una estadística económica completa de las provincias y prefecturas de China durante el período 1978–2008. Utilizamos el protestantismo como un indicador sustitutivo de la cultura, debido a que se ha vinculado la ética protestante con el espíritu del capitalismo y la cultura comercial en la famosa obra de Weber. Para aislar la variación exógena a la hora de medir la cultura, se emplea como instrumento la difusión protestante histórica. Los resultados de las estimaciones sugieren que la cultura comercial cristiana tiene un impacto significativamente positivo en los resultados económicos – PIB per cápita, después de controlar otras influencias importantes (es decir, el capital, la población, los recursos humanos, la calidad institucional, el comercio, la infraestructura, la geografía, etc). También encontramos efectos heterogéneos de la cultura en el desarrollo económico de las diferentes regiones de China. <p><blockFixed type="graphic"> <mediaResourceGroup> <mediaResource alt="graphic" copyright="2014 Regional Science Association International" href="urn:x-wiley:10568190:media:pirs12114:pirs12114-fig-5001"/> </mediaResourceGroup> </blockFixed>
