Das saubere Produkt: Ökologische Richtungssicherheit und Lebensstilorientierung
Als Einleitung zu seiner Parodie auf die deutsche Mülltrennkultur schreibt Robert Gernhardt: Jahrzehntelang sind wir locker mit zwei Bewusstseinen ausgekommen, mit unserem richtigen und dem falschen der anderen. Doch da aller guten Dinge drei sind, gibt es nun auch noch das Umweltbewusstsein. In den 80er Jahren hat sich dieses neue Bewusstsein, nachdem zuvor rauchende Schlote, stinkende Abwässer und hässliche Müllberge im Vordergrund standen, auch auf den Bereich der Produkte ausgeweitet. In die Produktwerbung hielten Begriffe wie „umweltfreundlich“, „ökologisch“, „alternativ“ oder „bio“ Einzug. Was verhilft einem Produkt zu so erfreulichen Eigenschaften und wie sind diese zu verstehen? An welchen Kriterien orientieren sich diese Begriffe? Erfolgen Verbesserungen in Bezug auf die wirklich drängenden Umweltfragen oder werden nur augenfällige Randprobleme angegangen? Dies sind Fragen, die nicht leicht zu beantworten sind. Spätestens seit der UN-Konferenz über Umwelt und Entwicklung in Rio de Janeiro 1992 ist klar geworden, dass es nicht allein darum gehen kann, die ökologischen Eigenschaften von Produkten zu verbessern, sondern dass soziale und ökonomische Aspekte gleichermaßen berücksichtigt werden müssen – dass es also darum gehen muss, nachhaltige Produkte zu entwickeln. Im Folgenden sollen daher verschiedene Analyse-Methoden vorgestellt werden, mit deren Hilfe erfasst werden kann, was eigentlich ein umweltgerechtes bzw. nachhaltiges Produkt ist. Des Weiteren wird die Frage erörtert, wie man umweltgerechte bzw. nachhaltige Produkte den Konsumenten nahebringen kann.
