Das Virus und die Weltmacht: Mögliche Folgen der Corona-Pandemie für die US-amerikanische Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik
Die Corona-Krise wird in den USA aller Voraussicht nach finanzielle Kürzungen im Bereich Sicherheit und Verteidigung nach sich ziehen. Einiges spricht dafür, dass diese Einschnitte zumindest mittelfristig - in den kommenden vier bis sechs Jahren - verhältnismäßig moderat ausfallen und die damit verbundenen Prioritätenverschiebungen eher graduell als grundlegend sein werden. Die politischen Beharrungskräfte in Washington zugunsten hoher Verteidigungsausgaben bleiben einflussreich. Zudem haben die USA viel mehr Spielraum als andere Länder, Schulden zu machen. Schließlich gibt es weiterhin einen breiten politischen Konsens in den USA, dass Amerika im Wettbewerb gegen China und andere Großmächte bestehen muss. Langfristig könnten die wirtschaftlichen Folgen der Covid‑19-Pandemie allerdings die gesellschaftliche Unterstützung für kostspielige internationale Engagements weiter erodieren lassen.
