Designing a Maturity Self-Assessment for Village Tourism Lessons from Indonesia
This paper presents the development of a maturity self-assessment method for Indonesian village tourism. Village tourism destinations have attracted increasing numbers of visitors during the Covid-19 pandemic because villages are perceived as being Covid-safe destinations due to their isolation. We employed a literature review to determine indicators of the maturity of village tourism, then adopted focus-group discussion to evaluate the indicators by distributing to participants a pairwise comparison survey based on an analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The pairwise comparison aims to evaluate the contributions of each indicator. Village tourism has four levels of maturity: the initiate level, developing level, advanced level, and optimum level. The level is determined by six indicators: attractions, accessibility, amenities, digitalization, organization, and sustainability. Based on the AHP examination, attractions and accessibility contribute the highest percentage to village tourism maturity: 25.63% each. 'Attractions' refers to the capability of the village to provide unique tourist attractions and a variety of tourism performances. 'Accessibility' refers to the connectedness of the village with various transportation infrastructures. 'Amenities' contributes 17.2% to the maturity model. It refers to the quality of accommodations, public toilets, and restaurants at the destination. 'Sustainability' contributes 12.44%. It refers to the capability of the village to implement cleanliness, hygiene, sanitation, and waste management, while coping with the economic impact upon the residents. 'Digitalization' contributes 9.8%. It refers to the capability of the village to adopt and reach optimum benefits from digital technology. Finally, 'organizational capacity' contributes 9.3%. It refers to the existence and performance of the organization managing tourism in the village. This research contributes to and enriches the discussion of village tourism research and provides insight for village tourism management to assess their current level of maturity, identify a realistic target, and develop an action plan
