Destination Discontinuity for Sustainable Development of Tourist Destination

The Himalayan region in India remains a popular tourist destination. It attracts massive inflow of tourist in this region round the year. Most of the tourist comes here for either for adventures or pilgrimage purpose. For the purpose of study we have chosen Uttarakhand as it provides both adventures and pilgrimage tourism along with educational tourism which made it one the most important region of tourism in complete Himalaya. The Uttarakhad state in India is divided in two divisions the north-western division is known as Garhwal and south-eastern division is known as Kumaon. It is a hill state with beautiful forest and snow-capped mountain and important pilgrimage spot which attract tourist round the year. Tourism here is a source of employment opportunity which provide source of living to local people. Yet tourism here create environmental and socio economic consequences, and mountain tourism require major concern as massive infrastructural development for supporting tourism by private as well as government is taking place with even estimating the tourism carrying capacity. During 2002 the foreign tourist data was just 2.38 million but it augmented three fold in a decade to 6.97 million in 2013 with an average annual growth of 28.78%. At present India's global ranking in terms of total tourist arrival is 42 and in terms of FEE it got 16th position which means that India is one of the most favoured nations of the world in top 50 tourist countries. India can increase its standing in the list of most favoured nation if it will take care of negative incidents. Therefore there is a need to understand the general framework of tourism management for understanding problem's related to the region's requirement with “S” curve analysis and destination discontinuity for shifting the inflow of tourist from one destination to other destination to make this region a popular among all the regions in Himalayas
