Determinants of Co-Operative Education Provision Among Agricultural Marketing Co-Operative Societies in Sengerema and Ukerewe Districts; Tanzania

This paper examines drivers influencing provision of co-operative education in Sengerema and Ukerewe districts specifically on the influence of membership size, funding and cost of education, activeness of the AMCOS management and readiness of members as well as seasonality timing on provision of co-operative education. This study is mainly qualitative and data were collected through focus group discussion, key informants’ interviews and documentary review. Data were analysed using content analysis. From the findings, AMCOS with few members were incapable of accessing co-operative education compared to those with many members. Lack of funds and high cost of education were responsible for poor provision of co-operative education. Again, AMCOS with active leaders and ready members got co-operative education while those with inactive members and weak leadership never accessed co-operative education. Unfriendly timetable was deemed responsible for truancy, absenteeism and poor commitment of members towards co-operative education attainment.Therefore, AMCOS with a small number of people and a weak financial base are advised to join their efforts to attract the trainers and reduce the payment burden. Fcacilitators are also asked to make a suitable seasonality timing to avoid absence of members. Also, AMCOS are urged upon to elect active leaders who prioritise AMCOS interests
