Developing Greener Cities in China

This article discusses sustainable development issues in China related to recent policy initiatives shaping urban planning and design policies throughout China. The article discusses recent plans for large satellite cities outside China's major cities and discusses zoning and planning issues related to the development of these cities as pedestrian and bicycle friendly urban areas. Specific plans for the satellite city Qingpu near Shanghai are discussed in the context of addressing the related issues of energy, the automobile, and urban sprawl. The article examines these urban planning policies as a form of New Urbanism with Chinese characteristics
