Development and Delivery of a Public Health Campaign to Reach Rural Villages in Cameroon Through a Grassroots Humanitarian Medical Organization
In this study, diarrheal disease is targeted through a public health campaign developed by the humanitarian organization Association de Compétences pour une Vie Meilleure (ASCOVIME) which delivers preventative medicines to adults and children in rural Cameroon. The development of this project is community-based and participatory, in which The Tippy-Tap, a low-cost hand-washing device that can be used readily in the developing world, was proposed with the goal to address community concerns around proper hygiene. In 2012, 120 pilot Tippy Taps were built throughout Cameroon and coupled with short educational hand-washing workshops. A three year program is developed that distributes educational posters to each household highlighting hand hygiene, water sanitation, and their relationship with preventing diarrheal disease. This paper highlights previous community participatory research conducted by medical students from the U.S. and Cameroon, to address the needs of the community and round out a sustainable public health program that will reach over 10,000 people in Cameroon per year
