Die Bedeutung ausländischer multinationaler Unternehmen für Forschung, Entwicklung und Innovation in Österreich
Multinationale Unternehmen betreiben Forschung, Entwicklung (F&E) und Innovationsaktivitäten zunehmend außerhalb ihrer Herkunftsländer, eine Entwicklung, die als Internationalisierung von F&E bezeichnet wird. Auslandskontrollierte Unternehmen gaben im Jahr 2017 4,1 Mrd. EUR für F&E in Österreich aus, was mehr als der Hälfte der F&E-Ausgaben von Unternehmen in Österreich entspricht. Österreich gehört damit zu den am stärksten internationalisierten Ländern in der OECD. Die F&E-Aktivitäten auslandskontrollierter Unternehmen sind vor allem in Hochtechnologiebranchen konzentriert. Die F&E-Intensität dieser Unternehmen ist durchschnittlich höher als jene von inlandskontrollierten Unternehmen. Die wichtigsten Herkunftsländer sind Deutschland, die Schweiz, die USA und Kanada. Der Anteil von nichteuropäischen Unternehmen hat in den letzten Jahren deutlich zugenommen. Die F&E-Ausgaben österreichischer Unternehmen im Ausland betragen etwa 450-500 Mio. EUR und werden vor allem in Deutschland investiert.
