Die EU und ihre neue britische Frage
Nachdem die notorisch europaskeptischen Torys in den Unterhauswahlen am 6. Mai zwar stärkste Partei geworden sind, aber die absolute Mehrheit verpasst haben, ruhen die Hoffnungen in Europa nun auf der Koalition mit den europafreundlichen Liberal-demokraten. Allerdings herrschen Zweifel darüber, wie europapolitisch kohärent die britische Koalitionsregierung in ihrer neuartigen internen Kompromisssuche sein kann. Dahinter schimmert - nicht zuletzt im Abwehrkampf gegen die Euro-Spekulation - die alte grundsätzliche Skepsis gegenüber Großbritannien als EU-Mitglied durch. Dass das Land mit seinem pragmatischen Exzeptionalismus weiterhin eine Sonderstellung beanspruchen kann, erscheint mehr als fragwürdig. Im neuen politischen System gemäß dem Vertrag von Lissabon müssen die EU-Mitgliedstaaten mehr denn je eine konstruktive Politik betreiben. Daher werden die Regierungen auf dem Festland kaum mehr ohne wirkliche Gegenleistungen auf das von der Finanz- und Politikkrise geschüttelte Großbritannien zugehen wollen
