Die Reform der Europäischen Währungsunion muss weitergehen

Der europäische Einigungsprozess ist ins Stocken geraten. Die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung in den Ländern der Europäischen Union geht auseinander. Die Unzufriedenheit mit der EU nimmt vielerorts zu. Populistische und nationalistische Parteien gewinnen an Einfluss. Zudem steht die Europäische Union heute vor deutlich größeren Herausforderungen als noch vor einigen Jahren: Die Eurokrise, die Migrationskrise, der Klimawandel, der Brexit und ein verändertes internationales Umfeld durch den Rückzug der USA und der angestrebten Führungsrolle Chinas in Wirtschaft und Technologie verlangen neue Lösungsansätze. Europa muss sich in der veränderten Welt neu positionieren. Vom 23. bis 26. Mai 2019 sind mehr als 500 Millionen EU-Bürger aufgerufen, ein neues Europäisches Parlament zu wählen. Die Europawahl bietet die Chance für eine Neuorientierung. Wie sollte sich die Europäische Währungsunion weiterentwickeln, ist eine Europäische Sozialunion wünschenswert? Brauchen wir eine aktive europäische Industriepolitik? Welche langfristige Klimastrategie sollte die Europäische Union verfolgen? Wie kann die Integration von Migranten in die Arbeitsmärkte gelingen, und wie sollte die Strukturpolitik umgestalten werden? Zu diesen zentralen Fragen gibt das ifo Institut Handlungsempfehlungen.
