Dimension idéale de la famille et tendances de la fécondité. Comparaisons internationales
Girard Alain. Ideal Family Size and Fertility Trends. International Comparisons. Since the 1950s when sample enquiries were undertaken in the United States, dealing with attitudes to fertility and asking questions about ideal, desired and expected numbers of children, such surveys have been undertaken in many other countries. Comparison of the results of surveys in different industrial countries reveals many similarities; in all cases there exists a relationship between ideal family size and achieved family size (though the latter is generally smaller than the former), the distribution of ideal family sizes is less variables than that of- achieved family sizes, and the modal value of ideal family size has fallen to two children per family, from the level of three and sometimes four children which prevailed in the period immediately after the war. The fact that these results seem to apply generally in industrialized societies provides an indication that they are an aspect of modern civilization which raises serious questions for the future.
