Drivers and Barriers to Investment in High Speed Broadband Infrastructure

This research identifies the reason for wide disparity in the investment in high speed broadband infrastructure through technologies such as Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) i.e. FTTx broadband. We employ a panel data analysis technique to identify the factors impacting the supply side of the FTTx broadband service market. Using data for 35 countries for 1999-2009 we show that revenue and foreign investment has significant positive impact in the investment. We observe that competition in broadband, competition in television service, and regulation on unbundling all have little impact on the investment in FTTx broadband infrastructure for countries in Europe
