Economic and Environmental Impacts of the Shifts to Electro-Mobility : Insights from a Multiregional and Multisectoral Approach
The decarbonisation of transport is a key goal for many countries and, in particular, for the EU zone, showing its commitment with the European Green Deal. At medium-term, this goal is focused on the electrification of the powertrain for passenger cars. It involves a change in the supply chain for production that could be significant for countries with a high weight of the traditional automotive industry, such as the case of Spain, where above 10% of the GDP comes from this industry. There is a forecasted shift from the sector of traditional automotive parts (combustion engine and associated parts) to the electric sector, where batteries and electric components will be the major part of the powertrain. This shift can have an important impact on the economy and moreover social effects. In this work, with a primary focus on the Spanish industry, we evaluate different scenarios capturing the gradual changes in the car industry from the ramp up of the electric vehicles market in Spain, but also in the European Union and the rest of the world by using an environmentally extended multiregional and multisectoral input-output model. Our simulations include the technological change and demand shifts estimated to achieve the gradual penetration of electric vehicles up to 2030 and 2050 The results show significant impacts on employment and economic indicators by 2050, when the share of electric vehicles is expected to increase up to a relevant level. The model enables also to evaluate the environmental impact and adding it to the operational vehicle emissions
