Linking academic enterprises to large-scale, money-making sports operations can be, to put it mildly, problematic. However, as I sit here waiting to attend a university graduation ceremony at our 90,000-seat football stadium, I can look at the sunny side. Sports team loyalties can be a great unifier. If limited to understandable college or civic booster-ism and good-natured ribbing of rivals, even those who do not care much for sports may see some value in a metropolitan or university population rallying around its teams.Regardless of any genuine feelings on the matter, faculty certainly can grasp the need to follow the most recent news, both good and bad, about local and nationally prominent sports programs. Students may thereby rest assured that faculty have at least one foot in the “real” world — that, whether factual or not, it surely seems we know something about student life. Also, sports, entertainment, or other current events can render vivid examples of or analogies to law
