Editor's Introduction
This issue of >i>Problems of Economic Transition>/i> focuses on two major themes: the status and reform of the labor markets in Russia and the outlook for non-Russian states in the former Soviet space, in particular the Central Asian states and Estonia. Labor market issues are critical to understanding the real status of reforms in transitioning economies. Among other things, understanding shifts in employment and unemployment trends reveals a good deal about other tendencies in the economy that may otherwise be obscured or hidden. Also, from the very beginning, unemployment has always been one of if not the major political issue associated with economic transformation.
