Effects of Electoral Security on Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria
The incidences of electoral violence in Nigeria are a constant nightmare and a serious source of concern to all actors participating in the electoral system. This issue has aggravated even as Nigeria especially in the fourth Republic. This has increased the level of insecurity leading to violence, apathy and citizens distrust in government. The study adopted secondary sources of data in a bid to establish the benefits of a secured electoral environment in the achievement of democratic consolidation. It was revealed that there are multi dimensional factors responsible for electoral violence in Nigeria. As a result, there has been colossal loss of lives and properties, voter apathy, Sociopolitical and economic effects, distrust between government and the citizen among other issues. In order to solve the problems bedeviling our democracy, a multi faceted approach must also be adopted where different actors concerned can freely perform their constitution roles and again attitudes and values of the citizens must gravitate towards a positive outlook thereby increasing trust between the government and its citizens
