Effects of Large Sporting Events on Bike-Sharing Use : Evidence from London

Using bike rental data from Transport for London, this paper exploits of the timing of Premier League games to identify how proximity to Premier League stadiums affects the daily ridership of nearby bike stations in London’s bike-sharing system. While bike stations within 0.5km of London Stadium experience higher-than-average trip arrivals across the entire sample period, results indicate game days at London Stadium cause a 36.46% decrease in the number of trips arriving at these stations. In contrast, game days at Stamford Bridge stadium cause a 24.12% increase in trips arriving at stations within 0.5km of the stadium. The effect of Premier League games on trip arrivals at both stadiums diminishes as distance from both stadiums increases. Heterogeneous effects may be explained by differences in the purpose of trips taken near each stadium
