El uso de las transferencias privadas inter-vivos por los hogares: el caso de México

Diverse empirical investigations have been carried out on the reasons behind inter-vivo private transferences, and on the relationship between these and liquidity constraints. Nevertheless, studies on how these transferences are spent are relatively scarce. In this document, marginal propensities to consume over different expense headings, including education and health, are compared between households receiving private transferences and those not receiving them. The database used is the 2002 ENNViH survey. We conclude that households receiving transferences have a higher marginal propensity to spend on the food, health and education of their children, than those not receiving them. These different patterns of consumption are mainly due to differences in household characteristics, rather than to the transferences themselves.
