Electrochemical Treatment for Leachate Retentate : Performance Comparison of Electrochemical Oxidation and Electro-Coagulation Technology
China produces ≈23.4 million tons of leachate retentate (LR) annually. LR is suitable for electrochemical treatment due to its high electrical conductivity. This study compared the performances of electrochemical oxidation (EO) and electro-coagulation (EC) technology on LR treatment under different experimental conditions, including anode material, current density, and initial pH. We found that EO optimal conditions achieved 95%, 97%, and 73% removal of total organic carbon(TOC), UV absorption at 254 nm (UV 254 ), chromaticity, ammonia nitrogen ( NH 3 -N), and total nitrogen (TN), respectively. EC exhibited a similar removal ability to EO for TOC, but showed less performance for removing nitrogen pollutants. In addition, the dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics indicated that EO exhibited relatively outstanding performance in decomposing organics with rather complicated structures than EC. Also, the flow field-flow fractionation technique demonstrated that EO could destroy humic-like, large molecular weight DOM, converting them to smaller molecules. In conclusion, EO technology is more effective for treating LR in municipal solid waste disposal facilities
