Energy Poverty and Economic Complexity : Effect and Transmission Channel
This research examines the role of energy poverty on economic complexity over a period of 1996-2019 for 116 economies. Additionally, we examine the transmission channel by which energy poverty affects economic complexity. The empirical relationships are justified by using Oster’ (2019) test, bound test, the system GMM and the instrumental variables techniques (IV-2SLS). The results show higher economic complexity is found if the energy poverty will decline significantly. Second, we use an alternative dependent and independent variable, alternative subsamples, and the instrumentation of energy poverty with nighttime brightness that give robust results significantly. Furthermore, the mechanism analysis demonstrates that energy poverty affects economic complexity through its impact on human capital and income. Policy implications are provided based on these findings
