Environment, Sustainable Development, Preservation and Some Ethical Issues with Reference to Guwahati City of Assam

The northeast hub Guwahati, becomes important after it became capital city in 1972. All the sub-urban areas of Guwahati developed and expanded. There are 18 hills in Guwahati city but most of them are either encroached or damaged. Garbhanga reserve forest is the biggest of about 188 square km and Sarania reserve forest is the smallest hill of about only 1 square km. These damages have been done only by the citizens in general and the industrialists, businessmen, educational institutions, also by the government.This paper is an attempt to find out some facts and happenings in the hills of Guwahati, responsibilities of different stakeholders of the city towards environment, and how they are directed by the intrinsic value consciousness. This paper attempts to raise an issue on soil cutting and haphazard developmental activities in the hills of Guwahati and relevant ethical issues in general context .The balance between development and ecosystem will also be taken into consideration along with those issues
