Exchange rate policy in China : the Renminbi as an instrument of power politics
by Holger Bastian Kindler
The old economic powers in Europe and North America are affected by the world economic crisis. At the same time, the new and rising powers in the East continue to grow unimpressed of the developments in the West. From the perspective of the West and particularly the USA, the growth in China is at least partly based on the undervaluation of its currency – the Renminbi. In this context, they consider China to be one of the main sources of the world financial and economic crises. This book considers this struggle around the economic imbalances between China and the US as an example for a power game. Thereby, it examines whether and to what extent exchange rate policy plays a role for exercising power – and particularly how China is taking advantage of exchange rate policy instruments for gaining international power. From a scientific perspective, it is based on a new methodology that brings concepts from economic and political science together – and thereby comes to new and interesting results.
