Experience and Reactions to Psychological Contract Breach among Nigerian University Academic Employees

This study investigates the experience and reaction of university academic employees to psychological contract breach. In other to achieve this goal, 316 academic employees from two (2) universities located within Benin City, Edo State were selected for the study. A total of 316 questionnaires were administered to the academic staff from both universities out of which 297 questionnaires were found usable. The data obtained was grouped using simple percentage and analysed using content analysis. The findings reveal that academic employees in the sampled universities experienced psychological contract breach in two main areas: (1) the working conditions, and (2) training & development.The findings also reveal that academic employees resorted most frequently to “self-help” strategies in order to address breaches of their psychological contracts. We therefore recommend that academic institutions should take necessary steps towards improving the working conditions of academic staff and devote more time and resources to staff training and development
