Exploring the Relationship Between Top Management’s Peripheral Vision, Their Leadership Orientations, and Employees’ Organizational Identification as Perceived By Knowledge Workers : An Empirical Analysis
In today’s business context, knowledge workers are the backbone of an organisation and are vital for its survival, sustenance and growth. Peripheral vision and leadership orientations of senior management also have a critical impact on the business. Similarly, the perception of the knowledge workers about these aspects and their own organisational identification patterns could complement the success of the business. To investigate this, we collected data from 244 knowledge workers from the technology business vertical of an Indian conglomerate. Our findings show that peripheral vision capacity with respect to culture-value/belief/behaviour was observed to be positively associated with all the leadership orientations proposed in Bolman and Deal (2003). Managerial attitude as a peripheral vision capacity variable was positively associated with the structural and human resource leadership orientations. Political and symbolic leadership orientations were positively associated with positive identification, while human resource leadership orientation was negatively associated with disidentification; structural leadership orientation was also negatively associated with ambivalent identification. A deeper understanding of these associations could help managements formulate the right policies and channel valuable and scarce human resources for the benefit of the organisation
