Fécondité, allaitement et mortalité infantile. Différences inter-ethniques dans une même région : Saloum (Sénégal)
Cantrelle Pierre, Leridon Henri and Livenais Patrick. ? Fertility, breastfeeding and infant mortality. Inter-ethnic differences in one and the same region : Salum (Senegal). Studies on the relations between fertility, breast-feeding and infant mortality have developed over recent years, chiefly as a result of multi-round surveys. From the data of a survey of this type carried out in Salum (Senegal), we attempt to demonstrate possible differences by ethnic group or caste within a population living in the same region (less than 500 sq.km.). The survey confirms results already obtained in another region of Senegal, Sine : which showed a high excess mortality between the ages of 9 and 24 months. The effect of breast-feeding on the average interval between births is shown clearly in both regions but the strength of the relationship is not the same. Infant mortality varies by ethnic group or caste : between 73 and 210 per 1000. The chance of dying before the fourth birthday varies between 175 to 467 per 1000. Fertility is far lower in one of the ethnic groups (Peul), where the mortality is also lower but breast-feeding continues as long as elsewhere. Better nutrition might account for lower mortality but the effect on fertility should be the opposite.
