Fécondité des mariages dans le quart nord-ouest de la France de 1670 à 1829
SUMMARY A study based on family reconstitution of 10 villages, randomly selected, with a population of 7 500 in 1821. The data, extracted from parish registers and vital statistics, have been completed with the listing of inhabitants when available. The proportion of births not recorded in parish registers due to migrations of couples or to sheer omissions can be estimated at 5 % by a method which takes into account the marriages of the children of the couples under observation. Various types of families have been distinguished in an attempt to assess the fertility differentials between migrants and non migrants. More definite conclusions are likely to be reached when dealing with all the regions of France. This part of the article shows, nevertheless, that each village was characterized by different migration patterns throughout the period under study. Prior to 1770, fertility was higher in this part of France than in the South West, owing to shorter intervals between births. As in the South West, marriage duration has an influence on fertility, even at the end of the 17th century. Although in these regions fertility has remained relatively high until now, the effect of birth control can be detected on the eve o fthe French Revolution. This finding is corroborated by a detailed analysis of the ages of mothers at the birth oft heir last child. Bridal pregnancies, rather exceptional prior to 1720, became increasingly numerous in Northern France throughout the 18th century. By 1820, the had almost reached their present level while they remained rather low in Brittany. This contrast between these two regions has not disappeared in modern France.
