Factors Affecting Knowledge Sharing Intentions : The Mediation Role of Attitudes in the South African Government Department by Tarisai Fritz Rukuni and Patience Elleth Nkuna-Nomandla
Knowledge sharing is a valuable asset for any organisation since it can be used to drive competitive advantage, performance and success. However, despite the existence of evidence on the importance of knowledge sharing within organisations, South African public organisations have not yet realised the importance of capitalizing on this concept. It is upon this background that the objectives of this study were two-fold, thus to (i) assess employees’ perceptions of factors affecting knowledge sharing, (ii) measure the effect of factors affecting knowledge sharing on knowledge sharing intentions and (iii) investigate the mediating effect of attitude towards knowledge sharing on the relationship between factors affecting knowledge sharing and knowledge sharing intentions. A positivist quantitative descriptive research methodology was used to operationalize this study and SMART-PLS was used to evaluate the measurement model, Structural Equation Modeling, and mediation analysis. This study concludes that employees had negative perceptions of factors affecting knowledge sharing at the government department in South Africa. It is also concludes that factors affecting knowledge sharing that include trust, organisational support and subjective norms have a statistically significant effect on knowledge sharing intentions at the government department in South Africa. However, this study also concludes that social networks and selfefficacy have no statistically significant effect on knowledge sharing. Also, it is concluded that attitude towards knowledge sharing has a mediating effect on the relationship between factors affecting knowledge sharing (i.e., trust, organisational support, and subjective norms) and knowledge sharing intentions. It is further concluded that attitude towards knowledge sharing did not have a mediating effect on the relationship between factors affecting knowledge sharing (i.e., social networks and self-efficacy) and knowledge sharing intentions. The present study also recommends the improvement of trust, organisational support, subjective norms, social networks, and self-efficacy within the organisation
