Farmers’ Adaptation Measures to Climate Change and Variability : In the Case of Debark Woreda North Gondar, Ethiopia
High mountain regions are particularly susceptible to climate change because a major portion of the population lacks the capacity to buffer and recover from climatic stress, and their production systems are sensitive to climate change. In this study, adaptation strategies were identified, farmer views were recorded, and factors affecting adaptation strategies were investigated. The study used 226 farmers to complete a semi-structured questionnaire to gather information about their perception on climate change and their responses to its effects. Additionally, throughout a 30-year period, the average annual rainfall for the woreda was used as analysis. Regression analysis shows that the mean annual rainfall for the area was decreasing at 3.2 mm per year (y = -3.267x + 7342.1). According to the Heckman probit and MVBP models, availability of water, educational attainment, social and economic group membership, and extension services were the main determinants of adaptation uptake. It will be crucial to improve these elements if we want to increase household adaptive capacity. National and regional governments should therefore be in charge of creating and implementing comprehensive policies and programs that improve farmers' understanding of climate change, promote local resilience, and promote the switch to climate-smart agricultures
