Fritten, frieten, frites of ‘freedom fries’?

The french fry was NOT invented in France, but in Belgium. This short paper, written in Dutch, describes the history of the french fry and explains why it's called the french fry despite being introduced to Americans in Belgium. Spoiler: the reason is that World War I soldiers in French-speaking Wallonia, in Belgium, gave the soldiers fries --- Belgian style --- and American soldiers thought they were in France because of the language. The paper also tells the story of Parmentier, a French scholar who wrote a doctoral dissertation about the potato and now has the dish, "potatoes parmentier" named after him
