Fundraising after a Calamity: How Non-Profit Organizations Deal with a Post-Tragedy Scenario
This paper will examine the historical framework of fundraising during tumultuous times. It will also examine the fundraising climate after the recent event of the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. It will then proceed to analyze data collected from a web-based survey and several interviews with staff members of charities who conducted fundraising in the New York City, Washington D.C. and the surrounding areas. The results will then be used to determine if the findings of this study are similar to historic fundraising strategies utilized during unstable times in the past. Additionally, this paper will attempt to identify the best practices used by charitable organizations and will offer suggestions derived from this research for similar organizations to incorporate into their fundraising strategy during times of uncertainty.
