High-growth women entrepreneurs and work-life balance : Challenging gendered assumptions and perceived work/life practices
This qualitative paper explores work-life balance and time management of high-growth women entrepreneurs from Stella Labs accelerator in San Diego, California. There is limited research that examines high-growth women business owners and how, in practice, women entrepreneurs manage their time. Therefore, we explored time management and work-life balance of high-growth women entrepreneurs through an entrepreneurship as practice theoretical lens. A unique methodology was used consisting of electronic calendar schedules recorded prior to the study and interviews to gain a greater understanding of the calendar schedules and learn how the entrepreneurs manage time and work-life balance. Findings indicated that once business ventures are stabilized, working 40 hours or less a week is more easily achievable, but once ventures are in the earlier growth stages, more time is devoted to work. Furthermore, findings highlighted that many of the high-growth women entrepreneurs place a strong emphasis on managing children’s commitments while operating a high-growth business
