High-Performance Aluminum-Based Matrix Composites Reinforced with High Content of Boron Nitride Nanosheets
The dispersion of high content boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) in metals is challenging due to its high specific surface area. Here, BNNSs/Al composites were prepared by shift-speed ball milling and step-by-step addition of BNNSs to disperse BNNSs as homogeneously as possible, and a direct current sintering (DCS) method was used. The effect of BNNSs dispersion on the tensile properties of BNNSs/Al composites was investigated. The ultimate tensile strength of the prepared 2 vol% BNNSs/Al composites reached 220 MPa, which was 69% higher than that of ball milled pure aluminum. By SEM analysis of the fracture morphology, the experimental evidence is obtained that BNNSs took up most of the load in the deformation process. High-resolution TEM analysis showed the Al matrix and BNNSs were tightly bonded and underwent interfacial reactions to generate AlN, AlB2, and AlB10
