High-Strength Polydimethylsiloxane/Polytetrafluoroethylene Hybrid Membranes with Stable and Controllable Biomimetic Structures for Oil/Water Separation
The oil leakage poses serious threats to ecosystems and aquatic livings. Membrane technology is considered as a favorable option to treat oil polluted water. The key is fabricating high-quality membranes to realize high-performance oil/water separation. In this work, we fabricated a high-strength electrospun membrane with an extremely stable biomimetic structure via a coaxial electrospinning method. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), three commonly used polymers, were employed as materials. The as-fabricated membranes exhibited coral-like or brain-coral-like biomimetic structures. Besides, the microscale strcutures and the properties of these membranes could be easily adjusted by controlling the electrospinning parameters. In comparison with the fragile pristine PTFE mats, PDMS used in the current work effectively enhanced the mechanical performance of the PDMS/PTFE composite. The Young`s modulus of novel PDMS/PTFE membrane can be enhanced as much as 32.11 times compared with the pristine PTFE sample (6.83±1.08 MPa). The as-synthesized PDMS/PTFE membranes exhibited good hydrophobicity and superoleophilicity to low-viscous oils. The obtained hybrid membrane presented high permeability up to 2437.29 L/(m 2 h) with a high separation efficiency of 99.94%. The excellent functionalities made this novel composite a well-qualified candidate for filtration and purification applications
