How to Integrate China into the International Community : US-China Relations Under Power Transition in the 21st Century

This paper studies the broad framework of US-China relations under current power transition in this century after Chinese President Hu Jintao's 2010 state visit to US. Should US compete with or contain China? By learning from historical success and failure, we propose a third approach: to make appropriate adjustments and integrate China into the incumbent international community. Integration means to make room for the new superpower, to mutually respect each other, and to lead the progress of the human civilization together. Based upon these three cornerstones, the paper assesses the past and present US foreign policy toward China in economic and security areas. The paper also proposes adjustments and suggestions of future policies to maintain world harmony and prosperity, and eventually to advance scientific progress and human welfare
