II. La population de l'Afrique.
SUMMARY // we except Central African countries which are very different from the other African countries (especially due to their lower fertility) and if we refer to the countries whose data are the most recent (Algeria, Kenya), the current birth rate is likely to reach about 50 %0 and corresponds to a mean number of 7 children by woman assuming that maternal mortality is nil. The mortality rate is about 16 or 17 %c : so age distribution is very young (about 50 % of the population is under 15). During the last few years, fertility has been on the upgrade in some countries and in others is not likely to decrease in the near future; on the contrary, there are reasons to foresee it will rise temporarily. Thus Africa is now in a very peculiar transition period with a mortality rate on the downgrade and a constant or increasing fertility. The consequences are an increase in the natural growth rate (which is above 3 % in some countries) and a very young population.
