Diese Arbeit rezipiert den Begriff der Industriellen Ökologie (IÖ) von einer transdisziplinären Warte aus. Explizit geprägt und verwendet wird dieser Begriff seit gut einem Jahrzehnt vor allem im angloamerikanischen Sprachraum als industrial ecology (IE). Dahinter verbergen sich zwei Hauptströmungen, die im IÖ-Konzept ein gemeinsames Grundkonzept nachhaltiger Produktionsweisen ergeben. Der deskriptive Ansatz der IÖ versucht anhand beschreibender Methoden einen nahezu naturwissenschaftlichen Zugang zu den Stoff- und Energieströmen industrieller Produktionsweisen zu legen, der normative Ansatz geht vom Leitbild der Nachhaltigen Entwicklung aus präskriptiv an eine erwünschte industrielle Produktion heran und leitet Szenarien für nachhaltige Produktionssysteme ab, wobei auch die Perspektive nachhaltiger Produkte und Dienstleistungen berücksichtigt wird. Es wird anhand eines transdisziplinären Ansatzes eine theoretische Grundlegung des Begriffes der IÖ vorgenommen. Die angestrebte holistische Sichtweise erfordert dabei einen theoretischen Ansatz, der die Fragestellung in seiner gesamten Breite abzudecken vermag. Hierzu wird zuerst die Metapher Natur als Vorbild für industrielles Wirtschaften auf ihre Aussagefähigkeit überprüft und ein vielfältiges Naturbild entwickelt, aus dem sich Implikationen für diese Vorbildfunktion ableiten lassen, die zur Leitlinie für die vorliegende Arbeit werden. Daraus ergibt sich das weitere Vorgehen, anhand der Naturwissenschaft Ökologie grundlegende Prinzipien der Natur aufzufinden, die sich als Übertragungsmuster für eine anthropogene Industrielle Ökologie eignen. In der Ökologie lassen sich typische Muster und Erfolgsfaktoren ausmachen, die für die langfristige Entwicklung von Leben auf der Erde bestimmend sind. Daraus ergeben sich Kriterien wie Kreislaufführung von Stoffen, zunehmende Diversität in Ökosystemen, rekursive Wirkungen mit negativen Rückkopplungen, Nischenbildung mit zunehmender Effizienz der Ressourcennutzung, vollkommene Basierung auf Solarenergie, Symbiose und Resilienz, um eine Auswahl zu nennen. In der Gaia-Theorie zeigt sich darüber hinaus, wie komplex die Metabolismen verflochten sind und dass sich nur anhand einer holistischen Sichtweise die ökologischen Wirkungen industriellen Produzierens abschätzen lassen. Da sich zeigt, dass der vorwiegend industriell induzierte anthropogene Metabolismus neben seiner rekursiven Verflechtung mit den natürlichen Systemen stark kulturell determiniert ist, wird die Humanökologie als verbindendes wissenschaftliches Untersuchungsinstrument herangezogen. Nur vor diesem Hintergrundwissen kann eine IÖ zielführend entwickelt und gestaltet werden. Es zeigt sich, dass in den holarchischen Beziehungsgeflechten der Gesellschaft-Umwelt-Interaktion, manifestiert im jeweiligen Metabolismus, selbstorganisatorische Prinzipien und Prozesse auftreten, die aufeinander abgestimmt werden müssen, wenn eine Nachhaltige Entwicklung (in Form der IÖ) angestoßen werden soll. Darüber hinaus wird nachgewiesen, dass sich diese Prozesse nicht auf das ökologische System beschränken, sondern sowohl das gesellschaftliche als auch das ökonomische System betreffen. Die ökonomische Theorie, insbesondere verkörpert in der Umwelt- und Ressourcenökonomik und in der Ökologischen Ökonomik, liefert dafür weitere Argumente. Die damit verbundenen Implikationen fügen zu den ökologischen Argumenten für eine IÖ die ökonomische Dimension hinzu. Produzieren ohne natürliche Ressourcen ist nur theoretisch möglich, reales Wirtschaften muss unter den Prämissen lebensweltlicher Phänomene wie bestands- oder stromknapper Ressourcen unter Berücksichtigung der Gesetze der Thermodynamik aufrecht erhalten werden können. Es wird gezeigt, dass dies in Form einer IÖ möglich ist, die eine wesentliche Prämisse akzeptiert: Die Stoff-Energie-Dualität. Darunter ist zu verstehen, dass jeglicher Metabolismus auf die Zuführung von Energie angewiesen ist. Diese Energie ist langfristig beschränkt auf die Flussgröße Solarenergie. Es kann nur eine begrenzte Menge an Stoffen und Materie langfristig in einer Ökonomie zirkulieren. Diesen Restriktionen versucht die normative IÖ gerecht zu werden, indem die Prinzipien der Natur auch für das Produktionssystem übernommen werden: solare Energieversorgung, Kreislaufführung, Symbiosen und Diversität der regionalen Ansätze. Die hierfür (theoretisch) entwickelten Konzepte der Industriellen Symbiosen, Eco-Industrial Parks, Zero-Emission, Kreislaufwirtschaft, produkt-integrierter Umweltschutz und die dafür entwickelten Management-Tools lassen sich zwar bereits zu einem bunten Strauß von Umsetzungsstrategien zusammenflechten, in der Lebenswelt sind diese Konzepte jedoch erst in rudimentären Ansätzen angekommen. Diese strategische Lücke zwischen theoretischem Anspruch der IÖ und der Wirklichkeit industrieller Produktion sollte durch weitere, sowohl theoretische als auch praktisch orientierte Forschungsanstrengungen geschlossen werden.
