In recent years notions like the ‘learning society’, ‘knowledge economy’, ‘information society’ have populated management and organisation debates, particularly as knowledge and learning are increasingly promoted as the new sources of wealth (Ball, 1991; Drucker, 1993). Moreover, a trend that is common to many organisations in the post-industrial society (Bell, 1976) is the volume, dispersion and complexity of the information available which has a significant bearing on efforts to ‘manage’ knowledge and support organisational and individual learning to meet strategic objectives....
